When you’re looking for work, the most frustrating things to see and hear are folks telling you what you might be in for or what your chances of landing a job are in a certain amount of time. LinkedIn operates like Facebook in pulling content related to what you’re searching. Generally, Facebook is harmless because you’re not searching for jobs there. LinkedIn KNOWS you’re looking for work.
You’re already frustrated that you’ve applied for 500 positions in the last couple of months and have gotten less than a handful of interviews, all of which you’ve been turned down for after the first round. You go to LinkedIn so you can resume your job search. But on your way to LinkedIn you get an email telling you that you should stop using LinkedIn to look for work because their service, which you’d pay for, will help you get hired faster. But then you’ll get an email from LinkedIn telling you that no one is more reliable for job searches than they are. You’re being told the odds because despite the fact that you have NO cash flow, you’re a nice juicy potentially paying customer for a service they know you need to look for work. Oh those vultures, and the vultures love to tell you what your chances are.
There is that LinkedIn feed though. Lots of people who have jobs already talking about how companies are looking for people to hire and people are looking to be hired but there is this HUGE disconnect. Maybe an article about how when you get interviews there are signs that you’re close to finding a job. How about someone who just lost their job who will tell you that working hard to find a role is not necessary because no matter how much or how little you try, you’ll still find a job at the time you were supposed to? It’s psychological warfare when you’re out there looking and everything you see or read will drive you mad if you let it.
Truthfully, the odds are 100 percent that you WILL find a job. That is the only probability you need to worry about. I’ve had so many people tell me that I’ll find a job when I’m meant to have it. I’m someone that believes I’m in control and I have lots of determination on the “when” based on how much effort I’m willing to put into the search. There are so many things out there to discourage you but think about every time someone in your life told you that you wouldn’t achieve something. Then work that much harder at looking for work.
As for these sales pitches….don’t fall for them. I’ve seen a few sites that won’t give you the job link unless you pay them. Then you pay them and the job link isn’t real. The only person you should be relying on and the smartest advisor you have in the job search is YOU. Remember that you don’t have time to be upset with the circling vultures. Let them circle. Eventually they’ll move on to someone more tasty because you wouldn’t give them the time of day.
LinkedIn and social media geared towards careers are tools and should be seen as only that. If you have an opinion to leave on LinkedIn then by all means, leave it. That being said, use the jobs posting they have and apply. Ignore the statistics. They aren’t helpful to you.
